The joke was on the audience. His statements were mostly dead factual. As pointed out in other comments, his genius was largely in his delivery.

I used to watch "You Beg Your Life" when I was a kid but didn't see this particular episode then. Now I have watched it a number of times and still get a kick out of it. Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez was called "Ramirin" when he played the Vaudeville shows in San Antonio. My mom went to those shows as young woman and knew some of Pedro's relatives. This was before TV. If this was all set up it was a work of genius!
